Installation Instructions

The following instructions will lead you through the following steps.

  1. Physically Install the USB Sensor (For USB Sensors Only)
  2. Install BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing)
  3. Install QCN Drivers (For USB Sensors Only)
  4. Configuring Your Computer for QCN Monitoring
  5. Installation of QCNLive (Optional; For Interactive Demonstrations Only)
1. Sensor Installation

Physical Installation of QCN USB Sensor:

1. Find the USB sensor included in the USB Sensor Kit.

2. Find a flat horizontal or vertical spot near the computer to mount the sensor. QCN requests that you mount the sensor on or near the floor of the lowest level of the building/house. The “Z” axis should always point up.

3. Using the compass on top of the sensor, rotate the sensor to align the north arrow (^) with the north line. (This does not have to be perfect, just within a few degrees). The sensor should be permanently mounted in this orientation.

4. Secure the USB sensor using one of the following options:

      a. A screw & screw driver
      b. Glue
      c. Strap
      d. Other (Please inform us if there is a better way to attach the sensor).

5. If you have the black model of USB sensor, then connect the USB cable to the USB sensor. (If you have the white USB sensor, the cable is already connected to the sensor.)

6. (Optional) Shutdown your computer and power off. (The software is plug-and-play. However on some systems the sensor could interfere with other hardware.)

7. Connect the USB cable to the computer USB port on your computer.

8. (Optional) Turn your computer on and login.

2. BOINC Installation

Install BOINC:

Please follow these instructions to download & install the software that will run QCN on your computer to monitor the Sensor. Please read the instructions carefully. QCN is a project that utilizes the BOINC (Berkeley Open Instfrastructure for Network Computing) software package. To monitor for earthquakes you install boinc, and attach to ‘qcn.stanford.edu/sensor’.

1. Download BOINC (the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) fromhttp://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php. BOINC manages the data transfer and day-to-day operations for the Quake-Catcher Network.

2. Uncompress Installation Program: Double click on the file named something similar to boinc_6.2.18_macOSX_universal.zip that should now be on your “Desktop” or in your “Downloads” folder: This should create a folder of a similar name.

3.Run the “BOINC Installer” now in the newly created folder.

4. Press “Continue” three times, selecting the correct drive for installation. And “Agree” to the license agreement.

4. QCN Configuration

Please follow these instructions to configure QCN on your Mac.

1. Open BOINC: (in the Applications folder). To run and configure QCN the computer must be connected to the internet. If it is not, please wait until it is before proceeding.

2. Add QCN to “My Projects”:

  1. Select “Add Project” (Lower Right).
  2. Select “Next”.
  3. Under “Project URL” type http://qcn.twgrid.org/sensor

3. Enter your email address and a password:
(If you have installed QCN on another computer, you can add a second computer under the same account by selecting “Yes, existing user”)

4. Enter Personal Information:
Your default web browser should connect to “QCN Account Setup”. To begin account setup, enter your user name and location. If your browser does not open, click on the QCN logo and select “Computer Location Info” from the drop down list.

5. Provide your computer’s location.
For USB Sensors attached to desktop computers, you need only enter one location (and not use the set current button).

  1. Select one icon, enter the location name such as work, home , or Class.
  2. Select the computer’s location on the Google map. For a more accurate location, try the following:
    • Zoom in or zoom out with the + and -.
    • Move the map by dragging it from side to side or up and down.
    • Toggle between “Map View” and “Satellite View”.
  3. For USB Sensors: Do NOT hit “Set Current”. If you did hit “Set Current”, then just hit clear and start over. QCN will know this the only location to use.
  4. For Laptop Sensors: When the laptop is at the location you selected, then select “Set Current” to permanently link your computer\’s IP address with that location. If your IP address changes occasionally, you may want to update this periodically. If you only use your laptop in one location, do not select “Set Current”.
  5. Select “Update info” so that changes take effect.

6. (Optional) Set QCN/BOINC as your default Screen Saver.

  1. Select “System Preferences” on your dock.
  2. Select “Desktop & Screen Saver”.
  3. Select “BOINCSaver”.

7. (Optional) Run QCN all the time. QCN hopes you will run QCN continuously in the background – not just when your computer is idle. BOINC and QCN use 2-4% of the CPU. By running BOINC & QCN continuously, you will be more likely to catch an earthquake. QCN thanks you for considering this option.

In BOINC select “Preferences” and then “Do work after idle for ‘

0

      ‘” or “(Run Always)” minutes.

(If you are running QCN on a laptop with an internal sensor, please do NOT run QCN in “Run Always” mode. Typing on the laptops keyboard will cause too many false vibrations.)

8. Notes:

  1. On laptops, QCN should only run when idle for 3 minutes – Not in “Run Always” mode. That way QCN does just not measure typing.
  2. QCN monitoring only installs and runs properly when connected to the Internet.
  3. If there is an earthquake in your area, please let us know if you felt it.

9. Check that you are connected

Check that your sensor/computer is connected to the Quake-Catcher Network. Click on the following link to see a map of sensors that are currently detecting strong new motions. By tapping your sensor, the map should light up in your location.
